Breastfeeding Basics

Lesson Description: This lesson covers basic breastfeeding topics helpful for health professionals.
Objectives:

At the conclusion of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers.
  2. Discuss why early initiation of breastfeeding is important.
  3. Demonstrate four different breastfeeding positions.
  4. Identify common breastfeeding problems and descibe nursing management.
  5. List contraindications to breastfeeding.

Learning Materials and Evaluation Methods:
Read the breastfeeding material in your textbook in addition to the material listed below. You will also have the oppurtunity to observe breastfeeding in your mother/baby clinical rotation at the hospital. Review material below over the next week, then you will be given an exam over the material in class next week.
